The Art of Communication has been compromised by technology. Do you agree?

Technology is vastly used in our fast-paced world now. To many, it helps to lighten their workload and speed things up. Spending hours just solely on manpower is tantamount to just a few minutes with technology. It is true that technology has not much harmful effects, however, I do agree that the art of Communication has been compromised by technology.

What is the Art of Communication? It is the beauty of imparting, interchanging thoughts, opinions or information by speech, writing or signs.

In the twenty-first century, we used technology tools, such as the computer and hand phone. How many of us can honestly say that we have never communicated via e-mail or messenger? I am sure that every single of us has at least come in contact with technology. However, this way of communication is one that compromises the Art of Communication. Majority of people enjoy using short forms to depict long, exhaustive words when they are typing. Also, many have forgotten all about the beauty of forming sentences properly. Only a pittance of the population does bother to form sentences and spell words correctly when they are sending e-mails or text message. The gradual failure to make use of sentence structures and spelling is what compromises the Art of Communication.

People will also end up talking monotonously and expressionlessly as the tendency of not meeting up escalates, due to the liking of communication through technology. They get so used to communicating through the computer or hand phone that they decide that it will be futile to even meet up. Also, people find it easier to face each other, whether it is to confess their love of have an argument, through a machine than face-to-face. Teenagers also find it easier to divulge and share their secrets with their close friends this way, as they will not have to face their friends’ reactions right on the spot. As time passes, more and more people will just start to sit in front of their computers all day and not leave house for any kind of celebration or functions. This will cause people to speak monotonously over time, as they tend to meet less people and thus, talk less. This inability to express ourselves to the outside world with emotions compromises the Art of Communication.

However, it is possible to check for spelling errors and wrong sentence structures with the help of technology. It is up to the user or typist to decide whether or not he should correct it. How many of us will actually do that? My guess is only a few, unless it is for a report or something formal. Even so, I am sure that the typist will have the urge to use short-forms when writing a report. The Art of Communication has been compromised by technology.

Even as we progress, it is important never to forget the wonder of the Art of Communication. The beauty of talking with expression and flow, typing with perfect sentence structure and of course, the very basic, spelling everything correctly.
